Student Guide to Generative AI

This research guide provides definition, information, and resources for students to understand the basics of generative AI and ChatGPT including concerns, limitations, and opportunities.

What is SIFT?

With so much information online, it's helpful to have a strategy for evaluating and getting more context. SIFT is a great way! The Library has a whole guide dedicated to this strategy here.

SIFT can also be expanded and used with generative AI tools to help get more information:

Use AI to Get Some Context

Watch the video below for a short example of Mike Caulfield, the creator of SIFT, using Google's AI Mode (NOT AI Overview) to fact-check a social media graphic and a longer exploration of the claim, "chocolate gives you better memory".

If you want MORE evidence and context help, Caulfield has also created two generative AI tools for more fact-checking or context exploration - the Well-Grounded bot on ChatGPT and the Deep Background bot on Claude (only paid versions).
