Accessibility Guidance for Digital Information

This guide presents a variety of information on how to improve accessibility in digital communications and physical spaces.

ADA Guidelines

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and sets forth the regulations for making buildings accessible.

Guidance for access to facilities such as libraries is available here: https://www.access-board.gov/ada/guides/

For more information on the ADA, see the full ADA website: https://www.ada.gov/

Sensory spaces for neurodivergent patrons

Some academic libraries are starting to open specific sensory, or low-sensory spaces for neurodivergent students.  For many autistic students or students with ADHD, academic libraries can be very anxiety-producing, due to bright lights, noise, crowdedness, uncomfortable seating, and more. Our space constraints in Beekman likely prohibit having a dedicated sensory room, but there may be ways to make our spaces more comfortable for all patrons.
