ENG 120 Furlong Fall 2025

for annotated bibliography research

Boolean Logic and Search Indexes

Use AND to join two or more terms and find results that include all terms. This is a way to get fewer, more targeted results.

women AND existentialism

ethics AND AI

(note: it is not necessary to type A.I.)

use OR to find MORE results, to expand your search results.  Reserve OR for terms that are fairly synonymous or at least similar.

nihilism OR meaninglessness

Use quotation marks around phrases of two or more words, for example, "internet of things" "philosophy of mind" "move fast and break things" "disruptive innovations"

you can combine for more advanced searches:

(ethics OR values) AND "AI Companions"

*retrieves all forms of the root and is not necessary on the Internet but often is required in database searching.

tell the database to search in particular places to get better results. Try searching in the TITLE or the ABSTRACT instead of a general KEYWORD search (which is the default search type in most databases). You can mix and match search types, for example:

the top box is a search in the Title and Abstract while the second box is a keyword or "all fields" search.
