EndNote: Using EndNote with Library Databases

EndNote allows you to select specific sources that you want to include in a BibTeX file which can be exported and then uploaded into Digital Measures. This allows you to import citations of your professional activities without having to re-enter all of the information manually.

What is BibTeX?

BibTeX is a specific file type like a PDF or DOC file for text documents or a JPG for an image file.

Steps to Export a BibTeX File

Before Exporting:

Before exporting your Digital Measures citations, you must ensure that:

  1. your citations are in their own EndNote Library file and not mixed with other citations for other projects and,
  2. you have the BibTeX export file type in your EndNote Library.

Steps to create a new Library from a group of citations:

  • Select all of your relevant citations. You can do this by clicking on one citation, then holding down the CTRL button and selecting the rest of the citations you need.
    • If you prefer, you can create a Group folder and drag all of the relevant citations into that folder (below).

  • Once you have all of your desired citations grouped, go to the References tab, then Copy References To, and select New Library (below).Screenshot from EndNote with cursor selecting References, then Copy References To, and then New Library
  • Save the new .enl Library file on your computer. Your new Library will open in a new EndNote window.
  • Close the previous Library and continue the steps below in your new Digital Measures-only Library which should only have citations you intend to export.

Steps to add BibTeX as an Export Type:

  • Check if you have BibTeX as a file type by double clicking on a reference to open the Summary panel on the right side. At the bottom, open the drop down to Select a Style. If BibTeX is not on that list (like it is below), you need to follow the next steps to add it.
