Pace Library's Collection Development Policy

The library is responsible for building inclusive collections representing diverse perspectives. Members of the community, including students, faculty, staff, and other library users, have the right to respectfully question materials included in the collection if they believe an item conflicts with the library’s selection criteria and policies. Patrons can request reconsideration of a work based on two concerns:

  • The material does not meet the library’s accuracy, quality, and scholarly merit standards.
  • The perspective presented in the material lacks balance, and a comparable resource representing an alternative viewpoint should be added.

The Heads of Research and Circulation Services will evaluate all reconsideration requests professionally based on the collection development policy. The library upholds the principles of intellectual freedom and strives to represent diverse perspectives. No item will be removed solely because of doctrinal or partisan objections. It will consider removing the challenged material, adding more resources that balance the challenged materials, or taking no action if the item is deemed to have sufficient merit and falls within the scope of the collection.

The goal is to maintain inclusive collections that promote free inquiry and critical thinking while ensuring materials meet scholarly standards. The library welcomes feedback from the Pace community as part of the continual process of evaluating and developing the collection.
