Pace Library's Collection Development Policy

Guidelines for all materials are:

  • Supports Pace curriculum and research: Most materials relate to current Pace students’ needs and faculty teaching and research.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Librarians will seek out and acquire materials that represent diverse perspectives, give voice to marginalized groups, challenge dominant narratives, and promote understanding of equity issues.
  • Wide range of perspectives: When evaluating potential additions, consideration will be given to resources authored or produced by people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences rather than focusing on one group.
  • Interdisciplinary: Preference will be given to resources that support researchers across disciplines.
  • Usability and accessibility: Libraries will purchase materials that meet accessibility standards for users when possible.
  • Cost and terms: When purchasing, Libraries will consider the overall cost, purchasing method, and anticipated cost-per-use.
  • Authoritativeness: Evaluate the reputation and reliability of the author, publisher, compiler, producer, and vendor within their field. Preference will be given to content from established entities that demonstrate expertise and credibility. Self-published or vanity publications are generally not selected.
  • Multiple copies: Purchase only one or two print copies of any title. Adding an electronic version is preferable to multiple print copies if additional access is needed and within budget.
  • Consumable materials: Avoid purchasing materials intended for one-time use, including workbooks and test preps. The purchase of software is prohibited.
  • Textbooks: The Library does not actively collect or maintain textbooks currently assigned for courses. However, we will consider purchasing textbooks individually if the content provides enduring scholarly value beyond supporting a specific class.
