Assessment of resources, services, spaces, and programs

Pace University Library Goals & Assessments

GOALS

To achieve the library's mission, aligned with Pace University's mission Opportunitas and the Undergraduate Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO), these goals were developed with methods of assessment that gauge the progress of each goal.

By using these assessment methods aligned with both the library's mission and the university's ILOs, Pace University Library can measure progress towards its goals while ensuring that all efforts contribute to the broader educational objectives of the university, fostering well-rounded, informed, and socially responsible graduates.

GOAL 1 -         Access

Enhance access to our facilities, services, staff, and information resource within and beyond our collections.

Assessments to Gauge Progress of Goal 1:

  • Measure how discipline-specific materials support students' ability to identify and access discipline-based subject matter (ILO KA 1)

  • Examine whether the library resources students are accessing support awareness  of social justice issues, respect for diverse opinions, and understanding of diversity (ILO PD 2)

  • Implement post-interaction surveys that measure users' confidence in applying demonstrated research techniques after reference consultations (ILO KA 2).

  • Track monthly usage patterns across the digital commons including OER resources to understand access across disciplines (ILO PD 2).

GOAL 2 -     Outreach

Leverage and forge opportunities that stimulate communication and build connections within our community to continually pursue our mission.

Assessments to Gauge Progress of Goal 2:

  • Track cost savings and faculty engagement metrics related to participation of OER programs, (ILO KA 1).

GOAL 3 -      Services

Develop, adapt and deliver quality resources and services, both technical and interpersonal, that optimize the library experience for all users.

Assessments to Gauge Progress for Goal 3:

  • Measure usage to examine how multi-format collection strategies enhance students' access to discipline-based subject matter in their academic work (ILO KA 1)
  • Assess students’ success in identifying the materials they need in the Library catalog, and accessing the materials in the stacks. (ILO KA 1)

  • Measure point-of-service satisfaction following reference consultations (ILO KA 1).

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reference support through transcript analysis and user satisfaction metrics (ILO KA 2).

GOAL 4 -   Instruction

Anticipate, design, and facilitate innovative information literacy and research skills instruction in various modalities to meet the curricular and lifelong learning needs of the Pace community. Through group instruction, assist members of the Pace community in adapting intellectually and technologically to an increasingly dynamic environment.

Assessments to Gauge Progress for Goal 4:

  • Assess students' abilities in locating and evaluating information after attending an instruction session using post-session quizzes, reflective activities, in-session activities, or follow-up surveys tailored to each session. (ILO KA 1, KA 2)
  • Understand students' perceptions of their own learning and engagement using surveys or feedback forms at the end of each session to gather self-reported data. (ILO KA 1, PD 1)
  • Measure the effectiveness of library instruction from the faculty's perspective by collecting feedback through surveys or interviews with faculty members.
  • Track participation and engagement in instructional activities by maintaining detailed statistics and completion records for sessions, tutorials, and online teaching materials.
  • Evaluate the integration of library resources in teaching practices by conducting post-workshop surveys to gather insights from faculty and instructors.
  • Identify areas for improvement and measure satisfaction by facilitating post-session surveys to collect feedback from attendees.

(Microsoft Copilot was used to help refine and enhance these assessment methods for information literacy and research skills instruction.)

  • Assess understanding of OER principles after training sessions (ILO KA 3).
  • Assess the effectiveness of OER implementation support through faculty feedback and student cost-saving metrics (ILO PD 2).
GOAL 5 -                   In Reach

Implement library activities that inspire staff participation and collaboration so that we may extend our work relationships, boost our energies, and foster our shared commitment to excellence.

Assessments to Gauge Progress for Goal 5:

  • Evaluate staff development in supporting discipline-based learning (ILO KA 1)
  • Evaluate staff training effectiveness in fostering leadership and communication skills (ILO PD 1)
  • Assess staff competencies in promoting diversity and social justice awareness (ILO PD 2)
  • Assess professional development for staff on point-of-service learning techniques, by measuring improvements in reference and circulation interactions (ILO KA 2).
GOAL 6 - Productivity

Explore and embrace improvements, which are measurable, cost-effective, and enhance the quality of our work.

Assessments to Gauge Progress for Goal 6:

  • Assess weeding and inventory processes to ensure collections remain current and responsive to academic needs, and support diverse perspectives (ILO PD 2)
  • Measure efficiency improvements in virtual reference response times and resolution rates, tracking impact on user satisfaction (ILO KA 2).

Undergraduate Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)

The Undergraduate Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO) are a developmental process, with input from a cross-representation of faculty, staff and students, that began in May, 2021.  The ILOs are organized into two related categories: Knowledge Acquisition and Professional Dispositions.

ILOs RELATED TO KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION

  1. Students are equipped to thoughtfully discuss, analyze, and apply discipline-based subject matter in writing and verballyThese attributes reflect the ability to locate primary and secondary source material, understand source integrity, and use that information in an effective manner.

  2. Students possess effective problem-solving strategies.  These skills promote effective use of textual material and scientific and quantitative reasoning and the ability to adapt strategies relevant to changing contexts.

  3. Students are engaged in discipline-based professional practice in a socially responsible manner.  Development of these skills were, in part, shaped via the myriad of experiential learning opportunities offered to students.

ILOs RELATED TO PROFESSIONAL DISPOSITIONS

  1. Students demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills.  These skills manifest in group activities, fostering effective change, augmented by values that respect opinions of others.
  2. Students understand and value diversity.  These skills have been shaped by civic engagement activities and an understanding of social justice issues.
