Assessment of resources, services, spaces, and programs

Streaming Video

Streaming videos have gone through various iterations from collaborative in-house development to the current services:

  • Subscriptions through Kanopy and Swank Digital Campus
  • Limited a-la-cart purchases
  • Free titles from reputable sources

Swank Digital Campus was the first subscription service with which the first contract was for two titles and then gravitated to 100 prepaid titles through March 2023. Faculty's requests for foreign films grew that allowed for the subscription of Kanopy. Kanopy's service model during launch was Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) i.e. there's no charge for videos played three times, however a fourth play triggers a purchase.  Through Kanopy's PDA service anyone can access videos from the Documentaries package without intervention from the librarian; only when faculty submits a Kanopy request form for a video from the suppressed packages does the librarian intervenes.

Type of Assessment Subscription data report, A-la-cart purchases, Free titles report
Assessment Description Faculty, staff and students request videos for classes, research, and assignments. Faculty submit Kanopy request form for videos from the suppressed packages; separate invoices are issued for both PDA and PURCHASE; PURCHASE list titles from the suppressed packages that were requested. Additionally, for Swank Digital Campus videos faculty primarily email the librarian, occasionally submit video requests through Swank Digital Campus that the librarian also receives, or use the Movie Request Form on the Pace Digital Campus site. Kanopy provides a comprehensive usage report organized by six segments from which relevant information is extracted while the other information is use for contract negotiation. Swank Digital Campus also provides data analysis covering monthly usage, title requests and for whom.  A-la-cart purchases and free titles reports are extracted from folders the librarian organizes by year, semester, faculty, and students; free titles are also sourced for students if a Kanopy request form was submitted as only forms from faculty are processed, i.e., purchases are made for the faculty.

Action Taken Based on Assessment Data Because of the high usage, the costs of Kanopy were doubling every year, that resorted to the suppression of packages except for the Documentaries package.  Faculty request suppressed titles through Kanopy's request form requiring approval by the librarian; only requests from faculty are processed for purchase - students are encouraged to have their professor submit a request on behalf of the class when requests are received from students.  Kanopy's high usage, as well as the expansion of its supplier base, impacted contract negotiation with Swank Digital Campus that led to 75% deduction of its prepaid titles from 100 to 25 titles effective March 14, 2023.  Pace Digital Campus was created as a holding place of all purchased videos to encourage usage of what has already been purchased. These actions taken, along with the provision of free titles where feasible, led to cost savings.
